Asian Film term paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 1
Asian Film term paper - Essay Example In defiance of what the society expects, those facing this situation make effort to gratify their selves through pursuing freedom and joy for a future of optimism. The importance of this topic lies in the fact that every individual in modern times is affected by this notion. This essay paper intends to demonstrate the conflict between individualism as a modern concept and the communityââ¬â¢s traditional values as depicted in Mehtaââ¬â¢s, water, Harks, Peking opera blues and Kwanââ¬â¢s, Rouge. Introduction This essay will carry out an analysis of how the directors have expressed conflicts using the movies as mentioned. In addition to this, the essay will look at some vital lessons arising from the complex events of what the various characters go through largely due to transformation of society and eventually getting freedom by themselves. Water by Mehta demonstrates conflicting ideas that characterize the ideals of individualism and values of tradition relating to obligations to family and social rules upheld by society. This is clearly illustrated by the female characters comprised of Chuyia, Shakuntala and Chuyia. These are three female personalities experiencing a complex situation in terms of two competing ideals. At this moment of history, India as a country is going through a cultural phase causing the situation to be more complicated. The emergence of new laws is attributed to a time of colonialism. These new laws go contrary to Indian societyââ¬â¢s traditional customs which concerns widowhood and remarriage. Kalyani loves Narayan to the extent that she flees with him to the other side of river Ganges where Narayan lives with his father (Mehta, 2005). Kalyani goes contrary to traditionââ¬â¢s expectations due to her plan to flee and get married by Narayan. Individualism is seen through Kalyani who plans to get remarried, a decision which violates the customs of India in relation to prohibition of marriage According to Shakuntala, the experie nce she undergoes in life results into a conflict which causes her to have contrary views about widowhood customs in India. She feels that there should be a situation that is ideal and capable of being accepted by all. Kalyan earns freedom courtesy of Shakuntala after which Kalyani flees with Narayan to the opposite bank of the Ganges River and apart from this; Shakuntala comes to the rescue of Chuyia (Mehta, 2005). This instance demonstrates Shankuntalaââ¬â¢s negative perception to customs and her adherence to apply it by remaining in the ashram. As events unfold, the individual ideals of Shakuntala contradict her apparent loyalty and commitment to the social norms of India which is in support of forbidding remarriage for widows. Chuyia herself despite adhering to the demands placed on widows according to Indian customs decides to go with Shakuntala so as to free her from the fate that she is destined to experience as a young widow whose age is too low. The events unfolding indi cate that the situation experienced by these three widows places them in a situation that require difficult conflicting decisions to be made. One of the decisions they must make for their own and each otherââ¬â¢s benefit is to ensure that life for them becomes tolerable. The need to safeguard their interest and individual benefits contradicts the commitment they are required to observe about Indian societyââ¬â¢s custom. The things they do indicate their rebellion of custom irrespective of its suppressive nature. In Harkââ¬â¢

Leadership models Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Leadership models - Essay Example Leadership Models or theories have been a central part of organizational management for many years. These help to make or break the workforce, and hence, the business. In this paper, four leadership models will be discussed thoroughly first. They will then be compared for any similarities and differences. Finally, their concentration on contemporary leadership issues and challenges will be analyzed, along with their implications for organizations today. The term 'leadership style' defines the "leadership model'. Style of leadership has been explained as how a person takes his team forward to achieve goals. This is the simplest definition of a layman. Good leadership is what makes effective management (Murugun, pg. 329). A model which defines this is, then, a 'Leadership Model'.Leadership has many functions that bring the team closer to their goals to carry out .The significance of leadership is reflected in the following functions: providing inspiration to employees, securing cooperat ion in the team, creating confidence among individuals, providing a conducive environment for employees, implementing changes, maintaining discipline among the members, representing them, and setting goals. (Murugun, pg.328)There are many factors that affect how a manager exerts leadership. The most important and the first one that comes to mind is his personality. The Leadership model largely depends on the nature of a manager. Moreover, the experiences of a manager also define his leadership style. He may lead in a certain way because his practices and situations in the past expect him to go forward in that manner. In addition to that, it is also based on the beliefs and values of the leader. He will also manage and lead his team according to the organization's environment, culture and needs. To get to the point, there are a number of leadership models, defined by a number of individuals. For example, Likert's leadership theories describe four kinds of leadership styles: Exploitative authoritative, Benevolent authoritative, Consultative and Participative styles (Likert 1967). Or , for example, Goleman's, Boyatzis' and McKee's (2004) six emotional leadership models: The Visionary Leader, the Coaching Leader, the Affiliative Leader, the Democratic Leader, the Pace-setting Leader and the Commanding Leader. But in this paper, we will only go over the four most common ones. The Charismatic Model adopts the Charismatic Style of Leadership, which is a style taken up by a leader who has a personality so charming and "charismatic" that he uses this to take the team forward. According to Max Weber, the term 'charisma' is used in the sense of an 'extraordinary quality' possessed by persons or objects, and is thought to give these persons a unique, magical power (Bendix 1977, pg.299). This leader is like an organizational hero who the subordinates look up to and follow strongly. They focus on making their team very different than the others. The charismatic model will only work with the kind of charismatic leader described above. The model sounds almost too good to be true, or practical. Which is the case, it is good but also not practical. The benefits of this model are apparent. Only by using pleasant phrases and appealing words and gestures, the leader can make the team get closer to his and their goals. Furthermore, he can make them believe and this belief is what fuels motivation. It could increase productivity of the workers and create a decorous, respectable environment. However, this doesn't always lead to successful results or achievement of goals, depending on the kind of team and the morale of its members. An "organizational hero" is more appreciated when the spirits of the individuals are low than when they are extremely self-confident. Moreover, according to Weber, a charismatic leader might not always be positive, for example, Adolf Hitler. In such situations this style is perceived as unethical by some because control is exercised on

Who's to blame for homelessness Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Who's to blame for homelessness - Essay Example We will also try to find the answer of the most fundamental question i.e. should help be provided to these homeless people? Who should provide this help government or nonprofit organization? Although there exists, alternative views about providing help to these homeless people I strongly support all help that is provided either by federal or nonprofit organizations. Homelessness Over the last twenty years a sharp rise in the no. of homeless people was observed. This can be attributed to many factors such as poverty, unemployment, family crises, sociopolitical conditions, family disintegration, violence, mental health and other catastrophes. In order to fully understand homelessness we first need to establish what exactly is termed as homelessness. Given below is the definition of homelessness as defined by Homeless Assistance Act 1987. A homeless person is can be described as ââ¬Å"one who has no fixed, regular, and adequate place to spend the night time or an individual who lives i n a refuge, welfare hotel, transitional program or place not ordinarily used as normal sleeping accommodations, such as streets, cars, movie theatres, abandoned buildings, etcâ⬠(Chesnay). This definition does not include temporary residence with friends and family. Some people believe that this definition of homelessness is too narrow. They are of the opinion that to tackle homelessness properly we need to concentrate on its definition because that in turn will define the size of the homeless population and will determine our policy to the situation. Oââ¬â¢Sullivan has outlined three categories of homelessness they are visible homelessness, hidden homelessness and at risk of homelessness. If we make use of all three categories it will help us tackle and prevent homelessness. Prevention Strategies Effective prevention depends on the two variables they are Identifying what we are trying to prevent Demonstration of result i.e. actually stopping or reducing frequency of occurren ce of the event. According to the public health model developed by Klein and Goldston, there are three types of prevention which are Primary Prevention Secondary Prevention Tertiary Prevention Primary Prevention Primary prevention strategy is a proactive step which is designed to prevent the action from happening for the first time or happening at all. From the perspective of our issue at hand it prevents homelessness from happening for the first time. Various issues leads to homelessness such as less income, family violence, physical and mental health and release from institutions or transitions from the social welfare program. Our primary strategy here for homeless prevention is to target these factors which involve community decisions and hence design our prevention strategies accordingly. (Martha R Burt) Secondary Prevention Through secondary prevention we focus on the early intervention so that before it becomes a severe problem risks can be identified. Secondary prevention in case of our issue at hand i.e. homelessness means diverting and focusing our attention to those people who have become homeless for the first time. The aim is to resolve their issues and help them getting out of this situation and taking measures which prevent it from happening again. The

Three Positions on Abortion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Three Positions on Abortion - Essay Example The conservative stand rejects abortion at any cost. This position is largely based on religious beliefs regarding the sanctity of life. Conservatives also cite the ââ¬Ëslippery slopeââ¬â¢ argument, where the right to end life could be extended to other situations, such as euthanasia. The liberal position permits abortion unconditionally. Liberals accept various justifications for abortion, including the womanââ¬â¢s right to make decisions over her own body, the quality of life of fetus and mother, and monetary and career considerations. The conservative and liberal positions are both reflections of the uncompromising rigidity which often characterizes any debate on the issue of abortion. On the other hand, the moderate position on abortion recognizes the moral implications it entails, and acknowledges that the rights of the mother and the fetus are in conflict in this situation. Moderates accept the need for abortion, but limit their acceptance to situations entailing defor mity in the fetus, health risks to the mother, and cases of rape and incest. I agree with the moderate position on abortion because of its attempt to reconcile two extreme stands. The moderate position appeals to me as it represents a genuine attempt to reconcile two opposing viewpoints: the conservative and the liberal. ... From the liberal perspective, the moderate position accepts that several mitigating factors, largely concerned with the well-being of the mother, can justify the overruling of the right-to-life of the fetus. However, it rejects a casual attitude towards the suffering of the fetus. This middle-of-the-road position ensures that the issue of abortion can be taken on a case-by-case basis. After all, each case has its own unique circumstances, and the conservative stand of unilaterally ruling out abortion is unacceptable. For example, if the pregnancy poses a risk to the health of the mother, abortion can be justified. Similarly, moderates do not condone abortion out-of-hand. This sets curbs on the overly permissive liberal position, which could generate a laissez-faire attitude towards casual sex and pregnancy. Abortion without any restrictions would lead to sexual permissiveness and lack of responsibility. The moderate position approaches the issue of abortion without any preconceived i deas of morality, and adopts a non-judgmental stand which particularly appeals to me. Just as the moderate position on abortion is a calculated compromise between two extreme viewpoints, it incorporates several ethical approaches into its deliberately balanced stand, and rejects any rigidity. The moderate position, by nature of its flexibility, and willingness to accept compromise, rejects the Deontological Ethical Approach, because the latter emphasizes rigid moral obligation. Moral obligation, without any consideration of the resulting consequences, is foreign to moderates. Similarly, moderates reject the Intuitive Approach, based on the perception that this approach is often individual morality, or personal prejudices, painted in stubborn
A Women's Dillema Between Her work and Family Essay
A Women's Dillema Between Her work and Family - Essay Example At the lunch hour, she picks all of her children, drop them home and then returns to work. By the time she gets home in the evening, she is drop dead tired, but she still fix a decent meal for her family and put all of her children to bed before she retires herself. She also watches television with her husband and has healthy discussions about family matters, politics and work related issues. Before she hits the bed, she irons everyoneââ¬â¢s clothes for the next day and then manages to get a shut eye of five hours, at most. On Sundays she does all the extra work like grocery shopping and laundry. She is a perfect example of what we call as a super lady. Though, Alena dutifully accomplishes all her responsibilities, she still gets to face her husbandââ¬â¢s sarcasm about how she didnââ¬â¢t groom her children properly because sheââ¬â¢s been working. She has to hear her childrenââ¬â¢s complaints about how she doesnââ¬â¢t look after them that well though she doesnââ¬â¢t lack anywhere. Women today have to face a lot of challenges when they decide to satiate the career oriented lady in them ranging from societyââ¬â¢s disapproval to the familyââ¬â¢s grunts. The statuses of working women have become better than what it was some 20-30 years ago. Isnââ¬â¢t it an accomplishment that they are not regarded as careless vamps who had no rights to vote

Maintenance Management of Engineering Assets Assignment - 1
Maintenance Management of Engineering Assets - Assignment Example Ventilation systems allow for the supply of air into the building and cooling in normally necessary to lower the temperatures The boilers: The boilers normally produce water that is hot and in some instances produce steam to be distributed in the space within which the system operates. This is achieved either by the use of coils or the use of water pipes leading to the radiator of the HVAC system. The chiller: This is the cooling component of the system. It is normally treated with air that is normally blown over the coils carrying the chilled water in the space of operation for cooling to take place through the ventilations. The fault tree analysis (FTA) can be used to analyze the major faults that are likely to occur in the HVAC system. The major faults that are likely to be encountered in the system can either be controller based or mechanical faults. The FTA diagram below analyses these faults. Control faults of the HVAC system occur in the functional components of the system. The faults can be in the form of variations in the thermal conductance of the fluid in the coils, dehumidification faults and non-linearity in the variation of the control system. These faults in the control system can only be solved through maintenance operations of the system. This is a procedure that is used for the evaluation of the various aspects of a functional system so that we are in a position to identify the critical failures that are likely to occur in the system so that we can be able to minimize or eliminate them through correction of designs. The main objective of Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is to make a determination of the parts that have the highest probability of failing in an assembled system (Salsbury, 2003). The process of Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) starts with the smallest components of the system and

Explain the guiding theory to which you adhere, combination of two Essay
Explain the guiding theory to which you adhere, combination of two theories, an integrated model of several theories or one dist - Essay Example I have compared aspects of Adlerian therapy, which to me seems to be a type of reform or broadening of the Freudian approach to psychotherapy to increase its application by focusing on family issues and personal problems, but decided that the Existential Theory represented by Carl Rogers and others would finally be the best field to specialize in for addiction therapy. I would like my work in addiction to relate to social functioning as a type of healing for the disfunctionality in the person suffering from substance abuse. When that person is able to return to a normal daily life and take part in activities that represent his or her own goals of self-realization, I feel that the counseling process will have been successful. In order to assist the individuals with this recovery process, there should be a combination of methods integrated into the counseling practice, and these should be based in a broad understanding of the schools of psychology and their unique benefits for treatmen t. I am personally focusing on Existential Therapy, Gestalt Theory, and Person-centered approaches for my counseling practice. ... In getting to know the people seeking treatment personally, the first aspect of counseling is to look through the substance abuse itself as a symptom to the deeper causes. An important aspect of this is being able to recognize aspects of abnormal psychology which may have roots in degenerative mental illnesses from adjustment problems and substance abuse related to traumas, childhood abuse, coping problems, peer pressure, or other factors that may have led to the behavior initially. The assumption in this process is that in identifying the root cause of the mental origin of the substance abuse problems by counseling, there can also be a conscious recognition of that issue by the person, and through this understanding the problem can be healed as that person becomes aware of methods through which the problems can be positively overcome. In seeking to provide an assistance role for these people to return to normal functioning in society on their own terms, the importance of Existential Theory in counseling becomes clearly evident. One assumption this method includes is that drug addiction and particularly the self-destructive aspects of it that lead people to counseling and recovery therapy are related to ââ¬Å"deeperâ⬠problems of self ââ¬âdevelopment and not genetically conditioned or caused by physical addiction to drugs like heroin or cocaine. Where there are physical addictions, these must be eliminated before the counseling can really progress, but in addiction therapy relapses are common so that the person may be constantly moving between treatment, substance use, abuse, and counseling. Thus the ââ¬Å"detoxificationâ⬠stage should be distinguished from the ââ¬Å"treatmentâ⬠stage, and the recovery itself proceeds from the treatment as the individual returns to normal
